Insurance Overview

At the top of the market, insurance stops being a commodity. A large yacht is placed, not rated: underwriters look at the build and refit history, the captain's licence and experience, the crew structure, the intended itinerary, and where the vessel sits during hurricane season. Those factors shape the terms far more than any rating algorithm, which is why the placement itself - and the survey and documentation supporting it - is where the value is created.

What Underwriters Actually Assess

  • Builder, build year and documented refit history
  • Captain's licence, experience and time on comparable tonnage
  • Crew numbers and structure, and who is paid
  • The next twelve months' itinerary and the hurricane-season plan

Why Choose Our Coverage

Documentation moves terms more than shopping the premium does. A documented refit, an experienced captain with time on comparable tonnage, and a credible storm plan are each levers; thin documentation costs real money on a large hull. We prepare the presentation, then place it with carriers that write vessels of this size deliberately.

Coverage Details

Our comprehensive luxury/elite yacht insurance offers protection against a wide range of risks specific to your vessel.

Agreed Value Hull

A fixed total-loss figure on a vessel where depreciation arguments would be measured in hundreds of thousands rather than percentages.

High-Limit P&I

Protection and indemnity sized against guest injury, pollution and wreck removal, all of which scale with tonnage rather than with hull value.

Captain and Crew

Jones Act exposure, maintenance and cure, treatment abroad and repatriation - none of which a domestic employment policy reaches.

Worldwide Navigation

Caribbean seasons, transatlantic passages and Mediterranean summers, with the hurricane-season conditions spelled out in advance.

Wreck Removal

On a heavy vessel in a difficult location this can exceed hull value, and authorities can compel it - it should carry its own limit.

Tenders and Watersports Equipment

Scheduled individually rather than left to a sub-limit written for a roll-up inflatable.

Protection and Indemnity at Scale

On a large yacht the liability exposure is not primarily collision. It is guest and crew injury, pollution from a substantial fuel capacity, and wreck removal - which, on a heavy displacement vessel in an awkward position, can be the single largest number in the whole loss.

Limits should therefore be considered against those scenarios rather than against the value of the hull. It is also worth understanding how the yacht's P&I interacts with any personal umbrella cover: the two can be arranged to work together, but only where that is designed rather than assumed.

Crew Are an Employment Exposure, Not a Guest Exposure

A professionally crewed yacht is an employer, and maritime employment law is unforgiving. Crew may qualify as seamen under the Jones Act with the right to sue for negligence, alongside the traditional obligations of maintenance and cure. Repatriation, medical costs abroad and wage continuation all become the owner's problem when someone is injured a long way from home.

These exposures are insurable and well understood, but they must be arranged deliberately. Domestic employment policies do not extend to crew aboard a vessel, and the gap is invisible until it is tested.

Itinerary, Hurricane Season and Charter

For a yacht based in Connecticut the annual cycle usually means a New England summer and a decision about winter: haul and store locally, run south, or ship the vessel. Navigation limits, hurricane-season boundaries and named-storm conditions all key off that decision, so settle the itinerary before renewal rather than after. Carriers can accommodate almost any credible plan, but they price uncertainty.

Charter is a separate question with a single clear answer: any charter use, however occasional and however it is arranged, falls outside a private pleasure policy and requires commercial terms with passenger liability.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a large yacht insured differently from a smaller boat?

Terms are negotiated on the individual risk rather than rated from a table. Underwriters assess build and refit history, the captain and crew, the itinerary and the hurricane-season plan. Documentation and presentation materially affect the outcome in a way they do not on a smaller policy.

Do I need separate coverage for my captain and crew?

Yes. Professional crew fall under maritime employment law rather than ordinary employment cover. Jones Act liability, maintenance and cure, treatment abroad and repatriation are specific exposures that need to be arranged as part of the yacht programme.

What survey requirements apply?

Expect a current out-of-water condition and valuation survey, and for larger or older vessels sometimes additional inspections - machinery, rig, or thermal imaging. A thorough recent survey with recommendations closed out is one of the most reliable ways to improve terms.

Can I use the yacht for occasional charter?

Not under a private pleasure policy. Any charter use requires commercial terms with passenger liability. It is a straightforward change to make deliberately and a serious problem to discover after a guest is injured.

How is hurricane season handled?

Most policies define a hurricane-season boundary and set conditions for vessels within it - haul-out, relocation, or a named safe harbour. Presenting a settled itinerary at renewal almost always produces better terms than requesting an extension mid-season.

Does wreck removal have its own limit?

It should. On a heavy vessel in a difficult location, removal can exceed the hull value and authorities can compel it. Whether wreck removal shares a limit with hull coverage or has its own is one of the most consequential distinctions in a large-yacht policy.
